New Evidence In the Growing Case for Sustainable Cleaning
A recent study from Purdue University identified that indoor air pollution could be worse than we think due to the formation of nanoparticles, which result from using products with chemically manufactured scents.
While our industry is well aware of the negative impacts of VOCs from harsh chemical products, these new findings offer more evidence of the importance of sustainable cleaning for human and environmental health.
Indoor Air Pollution Really Stinks
The research team from Purdue University discovered that scented chemical products such as floor cleaners, air fresheners, wax melts, and deodorants actively alter indoor air chemistry and lead to the formation of nanoscale particles. They form when fragrances interact with the ozone, which enters indoor spaces through ventilation systems. This interaction triggers chemical transformations that produce tiny molecular clusters that can rapidly grow and multiply, creating high concentrations of new air pollutants.
While the health effects of these nanoparticles are yet to be studied, the fact that they’re small enough to get deep into building occupants’ lungs means they could pose health complications due the concentration they can develop in indoor spaces.
A Sustainable Clean is a Safe Clean
Because sustainable cleaning products clean as effectively as traditional chemical formulations, they’re a preferable choice as they support improved indoor air quality as well as environmental and human health. Ensure you’re using certified sustainable products by looking for certifications such as EcoLogo and Green Seal. These third-party certifications confirm products meet stringent environmental standards throughout their life cycle. Beware of sustainable claims that aren’t verified by a reputable third party.
Making the Switch
Extensive scientific proof on the health benefits of sustainable cleaning products and the industry’s continual investment in sustainable alternatives, makes one thing clear – sustainable cleaning programs are the best option to support the long-term health of building occupants, workers who handle cleaning chemicals, and the environment.
